Dead Sea vs. Epsom Salt

One of the most effective ways to increase magnesium levels in your blood is absorption through the largest organ in the body- your skin. A common misconception is that epsom salt (magnesium sulfide) is the superior therapeutic bath additive. In reality, magnesium chloride flakes win.

Why are they better? In simple terms, magnesium chloride can be more efficiently absorbed by our bodies.

Bioavailability

When looking at the two compounds on a molecular level, you can discover why.

  • Epsom salt: magnesium + sulfate ( MgSO₄)
  • Dead Sea flakes: magnesium + chloride (MgCl2)

While both compounds contain a similar level of elemental magnesium, a key difference between Magnesium Chloride (flakes) and Magnesium Sulphate (salts) is the rate of absorption within the body. Because it is wholly soluble, Magnesium Chloride can efficiently absorb when exposed to the skin.

This high solubility is vital to allow the compounds to break their bonds and absorb effectively into the body. Ultimately, Magnesium Chloride can be more easily absorbed and utilized by the body, when compared to using Epsom Salts.

While the appearance and application may be similar, the ‘unseen’ difference in absorption between Magnesium Chloride and Magnesium Sulphate is what really sets these two compounds apart.
